(CS) Following the green light from the Luxembourg Infrastructure Ministry, Luxembourg City has turned a number of streets in the Pfaffenthal area into 30km/h zones.
The change came into effect on August 31 and affects Rue Vauban and Rue Saint Mathieu in Pfaffenthal.
The streets join a number of other roads in the Pfaffenthal and other neighbourhoods in the capital, where the speed limit is 30km/h.
The City in a statement said that the lower speed limit is aimed at slowing down traffic in residential areas and improving quality of life for residents.
Road safety was a particular concern, authorities said, explaining that the braking distance of a car at driving 30km/h is half that of a car driving 50km/h. Especially in busy residential neighbourhoods with many vulnerable road users, such as children, cyclists and pedestrians, limiting speed could help prevent accident, according to the City.
Additionally, noise pollution is reduced by slower speeds.
