(CS) After deforestation works were stopped near Ettelbruck after herons were found to be breeding in the trees set for cutting down, plans are expected to move forward in September.
After a severe storm in July last year it was decided that a number of spruce trees had to be cut down, as they posed a risk to two adjacent houses and users of a cycle path.
However, bad weather and difficult access to the terrain delayed the start of the works, which did not begin until April this year. Unbeknownst to the company charged with cutting down the trees, April marked prime heron breeding season.
A couple of chicks fell out of trees during the works, which were immediately halted. The chicks were placed in the Dudelange wild animal shelter.
With the breeding season for herons now over, work to cut down the trees is expected to resume in September.
Deciduous trees in the area will remain and it is hopes that the forest area will regenerate by itself, with the nature administration working towards a stable tree population in difficult terrain.
