(JB) Luxembourg City has withdrawn 14 buses after three fires were reported in the capital in the space of a week and another in Metz-Magny, France.
The move comes as Luxembourg's national association for public transport drivers, the FNCTTFEL, called for the buses to be removed from service until further tests can be carried out.
"Following the production of smoke and fire that affected articulated buses of the company CITELIS type IVECO / IRISBUS the Wednesday, July 29, Thursday, July 30 and Monday, August 3, 2015, the City of Luxembourg has decided to withdraw the 14 buses of the same type until the origin of the incidents can be determined with certainty,” the city authority said.
The Ville said that tests were carried out on the buses over the weekend to find the cause of the fire.
There were suspicions that the fire started with a short circuit caused.
Other theories point to a faulty alternator.
As a precaution, the service is currently conducting an audit of its entire fleet to determine if other buses have the same type of alternator. If confirmed, these buses will be withdrawn from circulation.
