(ADW) Three heavily armed men
burst into the Niederanven post office on Thursday morning and robbed it at gunpoint while two customers were present.
The incident is reported
to have occurred at about 8.30am at the post office located inside
the "Les Arcades" shopping centre, although luckily nobody
was hurt in the incident.
The dramatic scene
triggered a major hunt for the offenders including traffic controls on
the motorway to and from Trier. Officers equipped with sub-machine
guns were deployed and even a police helicopter became part of the
search.
The three dark-clothed
suspects apparently fled the scene in a dark green Audi 100 Avant BJ
with the Luxembourg number plate WZ079 that was waiting outside the post office, in the direction of Luxembourg
City.
Motorists are advised not
to pick up any hitchikers and any witnesses who may discover the car
should be extremely cautious as the perpetrators are considered to be
armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information
should call the emergency number 113 immediately.
Several robberies at post
offices and banks have occurred this year in Luxembourg including in
April when three offenders broke into a BCEE bank in the same
"Les Arcades" shopping centre in Niederanven.
