(CS/vb) Police investigators are facing a tough task to determine the cause of the fire that tore through Luxembourg City's Cat Club on Sunday morning.
Specialists were on site Monday to continue their investigation. “The extent of destruction is enormous,” a police spokesperson commented. “It will be difficult to find evidence of the cause of the fire.”
Emergency services were called to the nightclub in Rue de Hollerich around 5.30am on Sunday morning. The club was empty at the time, with neither guests nor employees at the bar or the restaurant.
Flames consumed much of the interior, with the wood-panelled exterior of the club left charred. The next-door building, housing the Cat Club restaurant and an architecture office also suffered extensive damage.
The owners of nearby shops had a lucky escape, as fire fighters on Sunday were able to prevent the fire from spreading. Second-hand shop Troc only had part of its warehouse damaged. The main store remains intact, manager Laurent Vergeynst commented on site on Monday.
Also at the scene on Monday was an employee of the Cat Club restaurant, wanting to take a look at the extent of the damage. The woman was devastated seeing her workplace destroyed. “I hope I won't be unemployed,” she said.
The future of the club meanwhile remains unclear. Owner Ed Schneider was on holiday Sunday and en route back to Luxembourg on Monday.
