Luxembourg City turned French for the
evening on Tuesday to celebrate July 14, France's national day. The
French Ambassador, Guy Yelda, hosted a reception at the embassy, not
far from Place Guillaume II where musical festivities took place
throughout the evening.
In Luxembourg, one resident in 14 is
French which means about 39,370 inhabitants. This in turn
works out at seven percent of the entire Grand Duchy population. A good
selection of those turned out on Place Guillaume II on Tuesday night to honour the Bastille Day tradition and enjoy a night of celebration
and good music.
At the Embassy during his speech in
front of a large crowd and in the presence of Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the City's mayor Lydie
Polfer, Guy Yelda addressed various points including Luxembourg's
presidency of the European Union and 'COP21', a climate change
conference in December in Paris where France and Luxembourg will work
together hand-in-hand.
The French Ambassador took a moment to
reflect back on the
January terrorist attacks on Charlie Hebdo and
thanked Luxembourg for its solidarity with the French people. He
especially thanked Xavier Bettel for "participating in the
march of January 11. This gesture was appreciated by the whole
nation. "
Back on Place Guillaume II, the public
gathered in the warm evening to celebrate with a drink, listen to
concerts by local and French artists and enjoy some French cuisine,
all in honour of the French national day.
