Chat with Luxembourg's Mutiny On The Bounty

Luxembourg’s Mutiny On The Bounty gave one of the stand out performances at this year’s Rock-A-Field festival and the instrumental four piece will be back on stage again on Sunday when they play the Holy Ghost Stage at Rock um Knuedler. Guitarist Nicolas, AKA Pzey, spoke to Sam Steen about their new album and their plans for the future.
Mutiny On The Bounty released their third album, Digital Tropics in April to rave reviews and the LP marked a change in direction for the band, “It’s entirely instrumental and I guess it has more influences from electronic music, it’s a bit more dancey, it’s definitely less harsh than the two previous ones” said Nicolas.
While the sound may have changed slightly, the process has remained the same though.
“Within each album and the writing we try to do something new and it was pretty natural that we wanted to go this way. After two songs we already had a direction of where to go”, Nicolas explained, “With Mutiny on the Bounty we’ve always written this way, writing the instrumentals first and then adding the vocals when the songs are done so for us it was really natural to work this way and we just felt that the guitar parts were already singing enough. There was already enough material to make the songs sound cool without the vocals.”
The new style is clearly working for the band and they have been receiving consistent positive reviews for their live show, most notably at Rock-A-Field and at Barcelona’s Primavera festival, Nicolas though is modest about their achievements, “We can’t complain at the moment, for us it’s working if we’re busy and we’re busy at the moment.”
It takes a lot of coaxing to get him to open up about how well they are doing but he does reveal how it was at Primavera and what made that performance so special.
“For the Primavera gig for example from the get go we knew it was going to be cool. When we were line checking people were already screaming and saying “Come on, play!” and people were really eager to see us and we had a guy dancing on stage after the first song so we could see that was a special gig for sure.”
Mutiny On The Bounty are an incredible live band with an energy that is unmatched in the local scene, they will be playing on the Holy Ghost Stage at Rock um Knuedler on Sunday at 8.15pm and it will be the last chance fans have to see them live for quite some time. They will also be performing at the Sonic Visions festival in November but the band won’t be in Luxembourg much between now and then.
“We usually try not to play more than five shows in Luxembourg within a year so it’s always cool to be back home.” Said Nicolas, “The last show we did (apart from Rock-A-Field) was the release party in mid April so it’s been a long time. It’s cool to see what happens and see if people have listened to the album and know the songs.”
