Vintage car enthusiasts were treated to a superb display of classic motors at the first edition of the Young & Oldtimer Day in Steinsel on Sunday.
The event, which was organised by Steinsel's youth sports and leisure community and the local military vehicles society, attracted plenty of visitors on what was a fun-filled family day out in the sun.
Among the many vehicles displayed by their proud owners were Buicks, Dodge Chargers, Chevrolets and Austin Healeys, from the 1940s through the late 1970s, as well as so-called “youngtimers”, cars from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s.
How the idea came about
Fränz Mangen, who is a member of the youth committee in Steinsel, told wort.lu/en: “The idea for the event came about when vintage car enthusiasts at the commune decided to get together and organise an event of which they all had a shared passion.”
Mr Mangen said the only aim of the event is to let enthusiasts show and share their love for vintage cars. It is not about making money, hence the event was free. Volunteers meanwhile ensured the successful running of the event for catering on site and registering of cars when they arrive.
“Being the first edition, it was difficult to know how big the attendance would be from vintage car enthusiasts,” added Mr Mangen, “so we set a date of June 22 by when those wishing to take part, had to have registered their car. But with the good weather, more people turned up on the day and fortunately we have managed to find space for them on site.”
Looking ahead to the 2016 edition
Mr Mangen added: “Looking at the amount of people here, it shows what a success it has been.” Looking ahead to the 2016 edition, Mr Mangen said he would like to see a live Western band
to provide added entertainment.
