Luxembourg City residents who want to install solar panels at home can find answers to their questions on a new, interactive solar map.
The online map, which went live on Wednesday, was produced by Luxembourg City and shows exactly how much sun each home or rooftop receives, while calculating things like the cost of installing photovoltaic panels and return on investment.
“Through the solar cadastre (map), the City of Luxembourg wants to educate and inform citizens about solar installations on their roofs, allowing them on the one hand to reduce their energy costs and on the other to support sustainable development through the use of renewable resources”, the authority said in a statement.
Users who enter in their address will be given an aerial view of the property, giving it a ranking for potential solar harvest of between “not appropriate” and “very good”.
Other tools on the site enable visitors to calculate costs, covering everything from loans to profitability.
The map forms part of the Capital's Environmental Action Plan and Climate Pact. According to the authority, Luxembourg City has a high solar potential which, if fully exploited, could provide up to 160 percent of annual residential electricity consumption, and a fifth of the country's total annual consumption.
The City authority is looking at installing photovoltaic systems on its own buildings. In future, a 30kW photovoltaic system will be fitted onto the roof of a primary school in rue Demy Schlechter, in Bonnevoie. And in future photovoltaic panels will be installed on other municipal buildings.
