Can you imagine Luxembourg City without cars, vans or lorries? A group promoting cycling, Lëtzebuerger Vëlos-Initiativ, has done just that, producing a series of artists' impressions giving at glimpse of what the roads could look like.
In the images, Avenue de la Gare, Boulevard FD Roosevelt and Boulevard Royal are transformed into pedestrian and cycle-friendly zones.
The LVI vision for what it calls a “sustainable city” shows people on bikes smiling, children playing in the street and large outdoor terraces filling the space once taken up by traffic.
“The City must exist for people. Thanks to its unique well-being side, we want to invite everyone to linger in places and to move freely and safely. Should this vision remain an illusion? No!” the organisation said in a press release.
The photomontages have been posted on billboards around the capital, where they will remain until mid-July.
The strategy follows a trend which has been slowly catching on in other cities, to provide a traffic-free vision.
“Through our work, we're shining light on our City where we would like to spend time. We want to make users of the City aware that there are other possibilities for making a quality, urban living space.”
Ultimately, the group hopes to put pressure on decision-makers in order to make the vision a reality, to redevelop public spaces, repair the architectural errors of the past and create a new urban atmosphere.
“Whether or not our vision becomes a reality, it will depend on the will of politicians,” the organisation said.
