(CS) Luxembourg City has been placed 139th out of over 290 cities around the globe for living costs for expats, and 31st in Europe.
The study, conducted by EuroCost International to help companies calculate compensation packages for workers posted abroad, assesses the cost of over 350 goods and services, grouped into 11 categories.
These include
food,
alcoholic beverages, tobacco,
clothing and footwear,
housing,
household equipment,
health,
transport,
communication,
recreation and culture,
restaurants and hotels,
miscellaneous.
Based on results from March this year, the latest ranking places Luanda in Angola as the most expensive city in the world for expats, followed by Hong Kong, Shanghai, Geneva and London. The top ten also include Beijing, Kinshasa, Tokyo, Singapore and Seoul.
On the European continent, Switzerland dominates, with five out of the top ten most expensive cities located there, including Geneva (1), Zurich (3), Lausanne (4), Bern (6) and Basel (7). Also in the top ten were London (2), Moscow (5), Oslo (8), Copenhagen (9) and Paris (10).
Both on a global and European scale, Luxembourg was ranked more average than maybe expected. Worldwide, the Grand Duchy's capital placed 139th out of some 290 cities. In Europe meanwhile, it was 31st out of 89 cities, including the capitals of countries on the continent and other major cities.
