Playgrounds and parks
Luxembourg is, without a doubt, a country where public areas are exquisitely managed. It is quite difficult to find a commune without at least one public green area or playground. So, the only thing one needs is to gather some toys, snacks, a picnic blanket and go out.
The Pirate Ship Park by avenue Monterey, the Castle Park at rue Charlemagne or the Merl Park are the favorites in town amongst the little ones. However, there are some secrets out there, only known by the locals. In Strassen, by rue Henri Dunant, families can find a very pleasant park with several play areas, a lagoon and even a cafeteria with a terrace (only open during the warmer months).
In Weimerskirch, Parc Laval is located by the river and offers a huge green area with lots of activities, including playgrounds, a slide and a soccer fields. Bonnevoie also has a secret gem. On the top of the hill, by the water tower, one can find several play areas, at least three soccer fields and even a basketball area. In Grevenmacher, by the Moselle river, there is a cute renovated playground and plenty of space for some sun baths. Remich also has plenty to offer by the river. A playground, a mini-golf and the electric cars are a huge hit for the kids. Also, there is always a lot of ducks playing around by the river.
Animals
In general, children simply love animals. Although "Parc Merveilleux" is the right answer for a day full of joy with animals and nature, there are several other options for free.
The "Déierepark" animal park in Esch-sur-Alzette is a great example. On top of the hill, by the camp site, there are several species waiting for visitors. As a complement, on the way down to Esch-sur-Alzette from the capital, a few farm animals can be seen by the Kockelscheuer Park and Ride car park. The animals are in the forest between the playground and the lake.
Driving up the road through Bambesch forest to number 400 “rue des Sept Arpents”, you will find the “Juegdschlass” restaurant. A strolling around the area will lead the visitor to the many horses, donkeys or even an American bison. Even though these animals are kept in private farms, you can get a good view from public paths.
Throughout the country there are many farms and green areas with animals. Horses, sheep, cows.... it is pure fun just a driving away and accessible to everyone. For free.
As for rainy days, there are also some alternatives. Just choose one of the many pet stores around the country and take the kids there. One can probably find there at least some cute rabbits, hamsters or fishes. A simple idea with a lot of joy for some curious little minds.

The doors are open
You may already have heard of open door events in farms, schools, shops and museums around Luxembourg. These all have something in common: many funny activities for free, usually for all ages.
Party at the Commune
In general, every commune has its own programme to involve its citizens more actively. So, from time to time, you might find some publicity at the mailbox about a special event in the neighbourhood. Don't be intimidated by the language barrier in the flyers and pop-in.

-Why not take a mystery family trip for a couple of hours on a bus or train. Just choose your destination when you hop on. Children aged 12 and under travel for free.
-Big shopping centers frequently organise workshops for kids on special holidays or during the school break. Check out the website of your nearest shopping centre to find out what they have going on.
