The 677th edition of Luxembourg City’s traditional annual fair, the Schueberfouer, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday afternoon with much pomp and ceremony, music and sheep!
The Glacis car park gave way to Schueberfouer with the cutting of the inaugural ribbon by the City’s mayor Lydie Polfer at 5pm.
This was then followed by a sheep parade, a nod at the origins
of the fair as a sheep market. The mayor, together with other dignitaries and
politicians, followed the sheep’s lead as they wandered the noisy alleys.
They were also accompanied by a brass band playing the 'Hämmelsmarsch', closely associated with Schueberfouer.
A total of 260 attractions are on offer, including 50 rides, 63 game
stands, 15 restaurants, 35 bars, 17 confectionery stands, and about 80 street
vendors, among others, so no shortage of drinks, food and sweets all
over the fair ground.
During the week, the fair is open until 1am, while on
Fridays and Saturdays it will be until 2am. The Schueberfouer is open until September 11.
