A Luxembourg co-production animated
feature film has just been announced as one of the first films to be
selected for this year's Toronto International Film Festival.
"The Breadwinner" hails from the
same stable as the award winning film "Song of the Sea"
co-produced by Luxembourg-based Melusine Productions and won "Best
Animated Film" in the 2015 European Film Awards.
Directed by Nora Twomey, The
Breadwinner is an animated
Ireland-Canada-Luxembourg co-production based on a popular novel by
Deborah Ellis and has the backing of several funds including the
Film Fund Luxembourg.
It tells the story of a young Afghan
girl called Parvana living under the shadow of the Taliban regime.
But after her father is imprisoned, Parvana disguises herself as a
boy by cutting her hair, in order to provide for her family.
The
official Toronto International Film Festival website describes the
film as "the extraordinary story of an 11-year-old Afghan girl who
finds strength in the love of her family and the power of
storytelling."
The festival runs from September 7 to
17 and "The Breadwinner" is among the first wave of films
selected. More films will be selected and announced on August 9.
