A British Bake Off in Luxembourg

With the weather looking a bit dreary over the weekend, what better way to make the day a little brighter by hosting Luxembourg’s own Great British Bake Off?
And that is exactly what the British Girl Guides of Luxembourg organised at the British Ambassador’s residence on Sunday.
From rainbow cakes to frosted pastries, any baked confection you could possibly imagine was presented, courtesy of the Girl Guides themselves, as well as their friends and family.
“It’s the first time we’ve hosted a Great British Bake Off event, and we’re hoping there will be more in the future,” Kim Clarke, the District Commissioner for British Girl guiding in Luxembourg, commented. “We wanted to organise something for everyone to have fun, and it also gives everyone the chance to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the embassy.”
With the British Ambassador, Alice Walpole, as well as food blogger and journalist Anne Faber from Anne’s Kitchen, both tasting and judging the cake entries, the excitement was palpable from each of the contestants.
Passion for baking
“The Great British Bake Off is quite a phenomenon in the UK, so we thought we might make an event out of it too,” Vicci Hamel, leader of the British Girl Guides of Luxembourg, said. “The girls love baking, and it’s a chance for everyone to get together. It’s mainly for everyone to have a bit of fun really.”
And with the way each tasty delight turned out, it isn’t hard to see the effort that was put into baking all of them.
Sophie, one of the patrol leaders of the guides brought two cakes, whereas Tilly, another patrol leader, baked a cake twice in order for it to be perfect for the event, demonstrating their dedicated perseverance.
“I love doing these types of things with the guides,” Ambassador Alice Walpole said. “They asked me to be their patron, and I don’t just want to be a patron in name, but I actually want to do things with them. I was myself a guide, and I’ve always thought it was a good opportunity for the girls to get together, so I’m really pleased to be supporting it.”
Anne Faber also had some positive words to say about the event. “I absolutely loved it! It’s great to see how much passion these kids already have for baking.”
With a raffle concluding the event, as well as the announcement of the winners of the baking competition for the Rainbows, Brownies and the Girl Guides, one could easily say the Bake Off was a success.
