Since Luxembourg joined the European Space Agency (ESA)
in 2005, the space industry has steadily grown in the Grand-Duchy and now employs
just over 700 people in the country, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.
The growth is mainly due to the development strategy of the
sector as one of the "priorities" of the government to diversify the
national economy.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the sector currently
boasts about 40 companies, including the satellite operators SES, Intelsat, and three public
organisations.
All eyes though are on the 'SpaceResources.lu' project aiming
to explore the natural resources of space such as asteroids, a venture that is
set to expand over the coming years.
