The new cycle path linking the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift with the Grand-Duchesse Charlotte bridge in Luxembourg City opens on Thursday at noon.
The path follows the natural terrain through the wooded area of Parc Pescatore and was made of concrete and wood, using micropiles that protect the roots of the trees along the cycling area.
The new path is 2.8 metres wide and allows a mixed pedestrian-cyclist circulation. It is also designed to extend the Schuman-Kirchberg roundabout cycle path inaugurated in May by the Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure François Bausch.
Earlier in July alderman in charge of mobility and traffic
Sam Tanson explained that the new path "will allow people to stop taking the current detour, where, if done correctly, you have to cross Avenue de la Porte-Neuve to make your way through the park before reaching the Schuman roundabout".
She went on to argue that many cyclists don't take the right detour, but rather use the sidewalks, which leads to conflicts between them and pedestrians walking or waiting for the bus.
Works to built the enw cycle path began in November 2016, with the total cost of the project amounting to €1.28 million.
With the new cycle path in place, Luxembourg City has a cycling network of about 160 kilometres.
