(AnB) On Monday, Romeo and Juliet, one of the world's best known love stories, was put on stage by the American Drama Group Europe (ADG) and TNT Britain as part of their yearly 'Castle Tour'.
The rainy clouds held off, leaving bright skies and the audience dry to enjoy the outdoor performance in the stunning setting of Bourglinster castle.
The spectators were treated to a surprisingly boisterous rendition of the essentially tragic drama that is William Shakespeare's play.
As per usual, ADG's performances brought to life Shakespeare with a small cast, a somewhat simplistic but nevertheless effective set and a limited array of props. With changing costumes, the six actors of the production managed to play all of the characters. With a few, differently stacked boxes and some sheets, a whole array of scenes were presented, such as the famous balcony scene and Romeo and Juliet's tragic deaths.
In addition, the production focused on the funny and even raunchy elements of the Shakespearian classic. Through audience interaction, highlighted innuendos and musical interludes, the cast managed to get more than a few laughs from the enthusiastic audience.
In particular, the first two acts were unconventionally quirky. As the tragedy inevitably unfolded, the tone got more serious but never entirely so, leaving some of the audience wondering if the drama group highlighted the comical elements rather too much.
Overall, Romeo and Juliet was driven by the talented actors and well executed.
As always, next year's performance was announced before the beginning of this year's play. In 2015, ADG Europe and TNT Britain will return to Bourglinster on June 29 to perform The Merchant of Venice.
For anyone who cannot wait that long, the drama group will stop by in Luxembourg for four days in January 2015 to perform Martin Luther King/Malcom X. For more information on upcoming performances, please visit luxembourg-ticket.lu.
