(CS/thi) Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno will take over from Emmanuel Krivine to lead Luxembourg' Philharmomic Orchestra, starting the 2015/16 season.
Krivine became the OPL's music director in 2006. Initially on a three-year contract, Krivine extended his stay until 2015. He previously directed the Orchestre National de Lyon.
In the search for a successor, several conductors were contacted and invited to Luxembourg. The final decision came down to two candidates – Joshua Weilerstein from the US and Gustavo Gimeno from Spain.
For the first time, the orchestra's musicians were involved in making a choice, with Gimeno securing the post.
The conductor began his career as a percussionist at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where he became an assistant to Mariss Jansons in 2012. He has also acted as chief conductor of the Con Brio Symphony Orchestra and Het Orkest Amsterdam.
A versatile musician, Gimeno has worked with several composers throughout his career and has been a guest conductor with a number of orchestras.
Gimeno recently performed with the OPL at Luxembourg's Philharmonie. He will lead the orchestra from the start of next year's season.
