In the last Taking a Break column for 2013, Dan Franch takes a ride on the Christmas market's Ferris wheel which, he finds, "is a lot like life; people getting on, people getting off, the big wheel spinning all the while."

We were at the Christmas Market last weekend, the fourth time for me this year, which is a record. I usually try to make it there twice; once with a friend of mine for a little drink and something to eat and once with my family for something similar. This season, though I went a couple extra times.
This year I also ate Gromperekichelcher, that traditional Luxembourgish potato pancake. After a few too many bites my stomach felt like grandma must have felt when she “got run over by a reindeer”. On the upside, that first bite made me think of my mom. She used to make potato pancakes while I was growing up. I hated them then; I don’t love them now. Sorry, mom. Sorry, Luxembourg.
