(CS) After trust in Luxembourg's political authorities had plummeted in September in the wake of the secret service scandal, the elections seem to have helped raise the reputation of political parties, the government and the opposition.
While trust in the government was at a low of 51 percent in September, this climbed to 63 percent in December, while trust in the opposition improved from 44 percent to 65 percent. It has to be noted, of course, that both the government and the opposition have changed.
While in September, the CSV and LSAP were in government, with the DP, “déi Gréng”, the ADR and “déi Lénk” the opposition parties, this has now switched to a DP-LSAP-déi Gréng coalition, with the CSV, the ADR and “déi Lénk” on the opposition bench.
Trust in Luxembourg's unions has also recovered to 50 percent, up from 46 percent in September. This was well above trust in employers, which remained only at 41 percent, up from 37 percent three months ago.
CSV first most trusted
The Grand Duchy's political parties meanwhile saw a trust boost among voters from 45 percent to 52 percent over the last quarter.
The most trusted party by voter meanwhile was the CSV, cited by 30 percent as their first most trusted party, followed by the DP at 26 percent. However, while the CSV remained in the good books of voters, overall it saw a decline in popularity while the DP saw a significant rise in trustworthiness between October and December.
The LSAP ranked third with 17 percent saying it was their first most trusted party.
These results form part of the fourth instalment of the December Politmonitor study, commissioned by the “Luxemburger Wort” and RTL and carried out by TNS Ilres.
The December 2013 Politmonitor surveyed a representative group of 1,046 people aged 18 or over, including 636 Luxembourg voters and 410 foreign residents. Only Luxembourg nationals were polled for the above cited results.
