(CS) Luxembourg freight airline Cargolux has signed a memorandum of understanding with US company Aeroscraft Corporation to explore the use of Zeppelin-style aircraft in the cargo sector.
Aeroscraft Corporation (Aeros) has developed the so-called Aeroscraft, a lighter-than-air aircraft, which uses jet engines for vertical take-off and landing, as well as specialised helium compression technology, making it possible to take-off and land without external ballast.
A prototype was successfully tested earlier this year, according to the company's website.
The two companies are now set to examine possible partnerships in the area of air transportation and logistics.
“Cargolux is pleased to sign this memorandum of understanding with Aeros and excited to further explore client solutions surrounding the introduction of this innovative new type of aircraft,” Cargolux interim CEO and president Richard Forson said in a press release, issued by Aeros.
The agreement allows Cargolux to become a launch partner for two new types of Aerocraft, with a range between 5,700 and over 9,000 kilometres and a capacity of 66 to 250 tonnes, with the company planning the introduction of a functional fleet of 22 vehicles by 2016.
Cargolux is not the first airline to express interest in the new technology, with Icelandair Cargo having signed a memorandum of understanding in November this year.
