25 years ago today, Luxembourg company SES launched its first satellite, the Astra 1A, making Luxembourg an important player in the world of interspatial technological development and broadcasting.
But, the launch on the night of December 10 to 11 in 1988 did not come about by mere chance. Years of planning went into achieving the project with much of the crucial work being carried out by key players like the late Pierre Werner. At the end of the 1970s, Werner, then Prime Minister to Luxembourg, was faced with a weak economy but identified five key opportunities in the Geneva Convention of 1977 with the aim of strengthening Luxembourg's broadcasting offering.
