The Luxembourg "Telethon" helped raise 42,000 euros for worthy causes in just 30 hours, with more funds expected to pour in by mid-January.
The annual fundraiser, which is now in its 20th year, ran from last Friday to Saturday. An added twist to mark the anniversary means that fundraising activities are expected to continue for 40 days, by which time organisers hope to raise 150,000 euros.
Organisers were pleased with the initial result at the weekend.
“This is a fantastic result, which we did not necessarily expect seeing that many people had already donated for typhoon victims in the Philippines", national coordinator Jean-Marie Gieres told the wort.
The Luxembourg Telethon runs concurrently with the French fundraiser, which raised 78,341,598 euros.
Last year the Luxembourg Telethon raised a total 143,000 euros so the goal of hitting 150,000 by January 15 appears to be achievable.
“We can be confident because of the way it happened this weekend", said Jean-Marie Gieres.
Other associated fundraisers to take place over the coming days including a 30-hour football tournament held in Mamer and the concert "L' Arte de la musica barocca" to be held at the Church of Bertrange on December 22.
A closing ceremony will be held on January 15, 2014, at Luxembourg's “Conservatoire” in Merl.
