(ADW) "Europe is about to get its second out gay Prime Minister" declares the catchy headline for BuzzFeed, the U.S. website with 85 million daily visitors, referring of course to Luxembourg's Xavier Bettel.
In just a few lines the site squarely puts the point in context: “Xavier Bettel is set to become Luxembourg’s Prime Minister in the next few weeks. And in the process he’ll become Europe’s second out gay leader”. The first was Iceland’s former leader Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir.
The site was not simply satisfied with pasting Bettel information from various sources, it actually contacted him for an intimate interview about his private and public life as well as politics. "I am like I am and I want to be honest with myself and honest in politics" stated Bettel.
But by far the most revealing statement made by the country's next Prime Minister was in relation to gay marriage in the Grand Duchy “Gay weddings with be done forthly (soon). At the moment in Luxembourg, we have to go through the situation of weddings, religion and divorce laws. But I don’t think it’ll be in the next five years – it’ll be next year” he replied to a BuzzFeed question.
Bettel concluded by saying " My vice-Prime Minister is gay as well. You have to prove that you do not have to fulfil cliches and be how you think you should be. People don’t care what you do at the end of the day”.
