(CS/na) Belval's new roads and boulevards are missing just one thing – working traffic lights. While the installation was completed months ago, they have never been switched on, because they are already broken and in need of repairs worth 50,000 euros.
The traffic lights were installed as part of the new development that continues to rise at the former steel site, including the Rockhal, which opened in 2005, the BelvalPlaza shopping centre and the new University of Luxembourg campus.
Some of them have been in place for well over a year.
However, lorries and other construction site vehicles have already damaged the brand-new traffic lights, and repairing them is expected to cost around 50,000 euros.
The City of Esch has so far refused to officially take over the traffic lights from the company which installed them, Agora, saying that repairs need to be made first. Otherwise, Esch would be stuck with the repair bill.
Agora has meanwhile said that it is nearly inevitable that material is damaged where there is a construction site. However, the company intends to repair the traffic lights over the coming weeks.
They will then be connected to the Esch traffic light network, which manages the light sequences for traffic lights across the city.
Until then, drivers will continue to have to follow traffic signs and highway code regulations.
