(ADW) Luxembourg airport is once again open after a two-hour shutdown that began at 11.30am on Monday.
Due to stormy weather across Europe including strong winds in Luxembourg, it was assumed by most of the country's media that the runway closure was due to the forecast. However, the Ministry of Infrastructure was quick to respond stating that the closure was only due to runway surface repair work being carried out.
In the Ministry's press release it stated that an “irregularity” was discovered during a routine inspection on Monday morning, which needed to be instantly repaired in order to avoid cracks appearing in the tarmac. For this reason the runway was closed, and therefore flights stopped, between 11.30am and 1.30pm.
Luxair spokesman Christian Welter told Wort that several incoming flights were affected. Flight LG3770 from Porto for example, that was scheduled to arrive at 11.35am, eventually arrived at 1.50pm in Findel.
The first flight to leave the airport after the shutdown was the 1.39pm flight to Nice. Flights to London and Milan caught up in the delays have been allocated slots just after 3pm.
