(ADW) Luxembourg City's Gare district has become infamous for drug trafficking and prostitution. However the situation appears to have worsened recently resulting in some rue de Strasbourg residents grouping together to state that "enough is enough".
Through a petition aimed at the City's mayor, Xavier Bettel, and the Director-General of Police Romain Nettgen, they criticise the current situation, said to be particularly serious.
In the petition, residents state that there are regular fights among drug traffickers in the street, leading to more serious violence both day or night, not forgetting the noise disturbances. Drug addicts are said to take refuge in the entrances of buildings to inject themselves. The remains, including used syringes and empty bags of drugs, are then discarded carelessly including at the doors of a day care centre for children.
Residents now say they are desperate and express fear of going out at night or inviting friends to their homes, a situation very hard to live in, especially for those with children.
"After several years of relative calm, crime related to the drug seems to have exploded in the rue de Strasbourg where, in addition to shops and homes, for a couple of years now a school and a 'Maison Relais' are located" notes the commune in statement.
For his part, police spokesman, Vic Reuter, in a statement to Luxemburger Wort acknowledge the problem; "We are aware of the increasing crime in rue de Strasbourg, the whole district of the Gare is known for its drug trafficking in broad daylight and has become even more intense in recent times, especially on this street.
