Luxembourg thriller “Doudege Wenkel” is to be entered into the running for the Academy Awards under the best foreign film category.
The gripping drama, whose title translates as “Blind Spot”, was a box office hit when it came out in Luxembourg 2012.
Directed by Christopher Wagner and produced by Samsa Film in coproduction with Belgian firm Artemis Productions, the film was entirely shot in the Grand Duchy using local crew and actors.
The film was one of the first feature-length films to be shot in Luxembourgish.
Its plot tracks the investigation of disillusioned police officer Olivier as he tries to unravel the mysterious death of his brother. Driven by his thirst for vengeance, he becomes embroiled in Luxembourg's dark side where the truth is far from what it seems.
More than 20,000 people watched it in Luxembourg where it became the fifth most popular Luxembourg movie in the country's box office history.
Now it is expected to reach a wider audience when it is considered by judges at the 86th Academy Awards. Luxembourg will find out whether it makes the shortlist of five nominations for the Best Foreign Film category on January 16, 2014.
