Luxembourg city is to offer free short-term parking from 5pm on Thursday, offering car users a cheap and convenient way to access the centre for short trips.
The Park+Buy pilot scheme essentially offers free parking for 30 minutes and is being piloted with four spaces in rue des Bains and a further 11 near to the city's train station.
In each space, the arrival of a car is detected and automatically triggers a green light. At the end of the time allowed, if the terminal does not detect the departure of the vehicle, a red light indicates that the limit of parking time allowed is reached. Parking wardens will issue tickets to motorists who remain parked for longer than the accepted 30 minutes.
A further 11 spaces have been created on the Avenue de la Gare and Avenue de la Liberté and six spaces are to be opened in rue Notre-Dame from October, 2013.
The concept forms part of the city's 2011-2017 mobility objectives by ensuring accessibility to the shopping zones.
The Park+Buy scheme will offer 30 minutes parking free of charge to motorists between 8am and 6pm from Monday to Friday. This system ensure that spaces will be freed up for other motorists at regular intervals.
