(CS) An illegal dump close to Bissen in the north of Luxembourg will not be cleared, Environment Minister Delegate Marco Schank revealed on Tuesday.
The minister added that more damage would be done to the environment during clearing operations. Therefore, the tyre dump would largely be left as it is.
Some 50,000 cubic metres of trash have accumulated at the “Kallekhaff” along the N22 since the 1970s, when a transport company started dumping tyres at the site close to Bissen.
Since then other industrial waste has also been dumped there.
While the tyres and other plastic waste will be left at the dump, another part where some 1,000 cubic metres of ash were dumped will be cleared, as the ash could potentially damage the environment.
“This ash has high zinc levels and presents a danger to the groundwater,” explained Schank.
The cost of the operation is not yet known. However, the minister said that the disposal fee alone would amount to some 100,000 euros, not counting the cost of the retrieval and transport of the ash.
