(ADW) “Cité des sciences” or Science City as the new university area of Belval is being dubbed, is beginning to take shape. The proof; four new bills were validated on Wednesday regarding Belval in parliament.
The first of them was passed unanimously regarding the construction of several buildings; an arts and student house, a data centre and a cooling production plant according to Luxembourg University's needs. Total cost: 83 million euros.
Another project unanimously agreed by parliament was the construction of a university library, for a total of 59.5 million euros.
A third project, less specific, involves the exterior of the 21 buildings to be scattered around the complex as part of Science City in Belval. An underground car park and a complimentary outdoor car park are also part of the urban planning for a total of 58 million euros.
Revitalise the old industrial wasteland
To complete the building line-up will be a house of innovation to be part of the university plans, bringing together the departments and units of CRP Tudor and the University of Luxembourg.
All the political parties stressed the importance of giving a second life to the Belval site. "The South has contributed to the wealth of the country," said Eugene Berger (DP), "revitalising Belval will allow not only a revival of the site, but also create jobs."
