(JB) A police officer has been charged with running down two Spanish tourists, leaving one seriously injured.
Police this week confirmed that the suspected drunk driver was a 26-year-old officer working for the Police Grand Ducale.
According to an official release, the suspect had left a night club in rue des Bains in Luxembourg city centre and was on his way to work at around 6.40am on June 29.
It is alleged that on the journey, the officer turned right onto Boulevard de la Pétrusse on Place de Metz as two pedestrians were crossing.
After hitting one of the tourists, it is claimed that the driver lost control, skidded across two lanes, crashing into a fence where the car came to a stop.
A police breathalyser test showed that the driver was over the legal alochol limit and his licence was revoked.
The suspect has been formally charged with involuntary assault and battery and awaits a court hearing.
