(ADW) The University of Luxembourg plans to create a competence centre dedicated to laser research at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communications Campus Kirchberg. A project involving investments of more than 450,000 euros by the end of 2014.
To remain competitive, "we must promote economy diversification and produce expertise as well as new resources," proclaimed the University of Luxembourg in a statement. It also mentioned that the project aims to develop “twin goals” of knowledge from laser technology, and skilled personnel for small and medium business ventures as well as international firms.
Copper and aluminium laser assembly plates
The university's studies will focus on laser applications in electro-mobility, the manufacturing of plastics and building façades. The research centre's first project will be to study the possibilities of laser use in the assembly process of copper and aluminium plates.
This new technique is particularly essential in the production of batteries for electric cars. "We want to purchase different sources of laser light to carry out feasibility studies and analyse applications for companies that have shown interest" explained project leader Professor Peter Plapp.
