(ADW) Just before the start of the “Congé Collective” or collective holiday-leave for the building sector, Luxembourg labour control inspectorate, ITM (Inspection du Travail et des Mines) swooped down on the Esch-Belval and the Stafelter Tunnel sites in a crackdown inspection operation on Thursday. Experts from Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Portugal and Poland were all present at the inspections.
A total of 37 people were involved. The main reason for the inspection was security, as well as health and administration. Correct employment procedures were also under the ITM’s watchful eye, and it was discovered that the sites had no ID or passport record system which meant it was impossible to establish who worked or lived at or near the sites. Several other minor breaches of legislation were also unveiled.
The reason for the international team involved in the inspections is that not all the employees and companies involved with the construction sites are local.
It is thought that more of these surprise inspections could be planned.
