(ADW) The first overall results of foreign residents registered to vote for the upcoming commune elections were released on Tuesday.
On the closing date for registration, 32,130 foreign nationals were registered to vote for the local elections that take place on October 9.
The global figure, does actually represent an increase of 34% in registrations or an extra 8173 people compared to commune elections back in 2005.
What that actually means in real terms is that the overall registration, taking into account the 5 year period residents have to be living in Luxembourg before they can vote is 18% as oppose to 15% in October 2005
All these figures may sound confusing, but what it all boils down to if we look at the population as a whole, including the fact that it has increased substantially in the past 5 years, is 12% of foreigners eligible to vote in Luxembourg have actually registered. Back in 2005 this figure was 10%. These figures however, do vary between nationalities and communes.
