(JB) It sounds like something from the imagination of Willy Wonka, but beer-flavoured ice cream is more than mere fiction thanks to a partnership between national brewer Simon and Luxlait.
The inventive Wiltz-based brewery has just launched Béierglace, combining the refreshing benefits of their mouthwatering Dinkel beer with Luxlait's ice-cream.
Its latest creation provides a powerful punch to consumers thanks to the aromatic flavours of the beer and small alcoholic kick.
Simon Director Betty Fontaine explained: "The idea isn’t a new one. Some chefs already tried it out a couple of years ago such as Hans Poppelaars from the Manoir Kasselslay, but it's the first time we've done anything like this in the supermarket. In general, I like it to combine beer with other products and flavours. We've already experimented with making bread with some of our beers. I want to show the different faces of beer and get people to discover how tasty it can be."
Because of its alcoholic content, Béierglace is not appropriate for children.
The ice cream is available in Luxembourg supermarkets until October and at the Kugener restaurant at the Schueberfouer.
If it proves a big hit with consumers, the brewery may develop a series of products.
