As the skies darkened, so the heavy rains arrived together with very strong winds. While the west of the country came off lightly or even the weather went by virtually unnoticed, the east on Saturday afternoon was battered by thunderstorms for quarter of an hour with its focus appearing to be the small town and property of Wellenstein.
Falling roof, but no injuries
For one unfortunate resident a massive gust of wind was enough to tear the roof completely off the house and send in crashing into the main road in Wellenstein below. The astonishing result was a house looking as though a roof had never been constructed.
The blessing in disguise however, due to the bad weather, nobody was in the streets meaning that there were no injuries from the falling roof.
The road however, littered with debris, was closed until 6pm while local firefighters and police carried out a clean-up operation.
François Hemmen, mayor of Wellenstein commune told wort.lu that the residents of the house would be temporarily housed in an apartment nearby.
During the course of Saturday carpenters worked to cover the roofless house with tarpaulin.
Remich Esplanade tree damage
Less serious than Wellenstein, in some places around Remich mud was washed from the vineyards in the streets. Some house cellars were flooded with water for a short time and several trees fell.
As seems to occur during every storm, the Esplanade in Remich suffered tree damage. A dozen trees were uprooted, others had broken branches and paths in some areas became impassable.
All this proved a lot of work for the Remich fire brigade.
