A gas tower that has dominated the city skyline for decades is to be razed to make way for a new development.
The 40-metre tall, iconic building will be closed from September or October to be demolished further in the future.
City homes which rely on the tower for gas supplies, will be served by a station in rue Nicolas Bové, near Helfenterbrück.
The first gas storage facility was installed in Hollerich in 1899. Nowadays, it is only used to store gas during periods of low demand in preparation for peak usage times such as during winter.
The site is located in the heart of the Hollerich master plan, a development blue print aimed at revitalising the area in the coming decades.
According to city deputy mayor Simone Beissel, the master plan will be implemented, though discusssions are still underway to decide the layout of future streets and other details planned in the first phase.
