(JB) Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize has recalled a batch of organic eggs after fears they may be contaminated with dioxins.
Anyone who has purchased organic eggs from Delhaize stores in Luxembourg with expiry dates 25/8, 1/9 and 7/9 marked LOT: 0-NL-43149 are urged to return them to the store.
According to the Dutch food safety authority, dioxin contaminated eggs from a single organic farm in Holland had been sent to a packing plant in Belgium.
From there they had been sold to a retail chain in Luxembourg and another in Belgium.
While the tainted eggs have been withdrawn from the market and companies manufacturing egg products warned, the authority could not specify how many eggs had been affected.
Delhaize said in a press statement that the product recall is being conducted purely as a safety precaution.
The cause of the contamination remains a mystery. An investigation has been launched into the egg producing farm where the contamination was traced to.
The Dutch food safety authority has however said that the levels of toxins found in the eggs “do not contain a too high level of dioxins.”
Dioxins are highly toxic and can cause reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones and also cause cancer.
Customers who believe they may have purchased dioxin-contaminated eggs can seek further advice by calling Delhaize on 0032 24 12 20 01.
