(ADW) A man dramatically attempted to take his own life in Mamer on Sunday afternoon. In front of his ex-girlfriend the 44-year old, doused with petrol, set himself on fire.
Neighbours rushed to the scene to help the burning man, smothering the flames with blankets. A garden hose was used to cool the man’s serious burns until emergency services arrived.
Paramedics from the ambulance service managed to stabilize the man’s condition, however his severe burns were considered life-threatening.
Luxembourg Air Rescue then flew the man to a special burns hospital in Liege. The condition of the 44-year-old Frenchman, who lives in Luxembourg City, was still reported as critical on Sunday evening.
As well as an ambulance from Mamer and police from Capellen as being present at the scene, psychological civil defence and emergency units, part of criminal police investigations, were also deployed.
