(AP) One Russian policeman is dead and about 60 people are wounded after a pair of bombings in the capital of the violence-plagued republic of Dagestan.
A spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry, Oleg Morozov, said the blasts went off early on Thursday near the ministry's republican headquarters in Makhachkala.
According to Morozov, the first blast hit a police patrol that was following a car, wounding four officers. When other police rushed to the scene, a car bomb exploded.
The second, more powerful bomb was estimated at the equivalent of about five kilograms of TNT.
Dagestan regularly sees attacks connected both to criminal gangs and to Islamic insurgents.
