If there’s one party, in relative terms, that can be said to be Sunday’s “winner”, it must be “déi gréng”. If you look at proportional voting communes and disregard the newly formed ones, the greens managed to win 59% more votes than in the last commune elections rising from 41 to 65 mandates.
KPL (Kommunistesch Partei Lëtzebuerg) managed to win three council seats out of the blue, so to speak, as the last local election gave them nothing.
One of the biggest surprises however is the rise of “déi lénk” managing to win 7 seats, which is a massive 600% increase for them compared to 2005 (1 seat).
Although the actual seats are numerically insignificant compared to the “big daddy” parties’ results, Luxembourg’s left-wing has managed a record election. It is interesting to note the sharp left turn at the local level, despite the parties only holding about 2% of proportional commune seats. It hammers home KPL’s campaign slogan “it starts at a local level”.
The Grand Duchy’s political journey seems to have arrived at an interesting junction leaving one wondering which route the national elections in 2013 will take Luxembourg. When the light turns green, sharp left maybe?
