(NaR/ADW) A truck driver had a lucky escape in the early hours of Friday morning when his vehicle crashed into a bridge pillar on the A6 motorway.
For unknown reasons at this stage, the driver of a Belgian truck lost control on a wet road just before the junction with A3 in the direction of France, and hurtled towards a concrete bridge pillar. According to preliminary reports, although the driver was helpless to avert the collision, he did manage to turn the truck’s cabin at the last minute, avoiding a frontal impact that could have seriously injured the driver. Instead, the side of the truck’s cabin and trailer smashed into the bridge pillar.
The driver was extremely lucky to escape with only slight injuries but did suffer from shock after the accident and taken to hospital.
The fire department confirmed that the truck, from a Belgian logistics company, was not carrying any dangerous cargo, however fuel tanks were damaged in the accident and a lot of diesel spilled out by the side of the motorway.
It has not been reported at this stage whether any structural damage has been caused to the bridge.
In the initial confusion and set up of traffic diversion, another minor collision occurred, causing vehicle bodywork damage, but nobody was injured.
