The Beaufort Tourist Information Office and local politicians, have finally had their wishes come true: the ice skating and ice karting rink finally has a cover and is no longer totally open to the elements.
On Friday, the rink with a new canvas roof was officially opened. Figure skaters and the local hockey club gave demonstrations in front of ministers, Francoise Hetto-Gaasch and Romain Schneider.
The idea of giving a roof to the rink in Beaufort has been going on for 20 years now. However Commune and Tourist Office plans, always failed due to costs being too high. Only through the support of both the Sports and Tourism Ministries was the plan able to see the light of day.
1.8 million euros were invested by the two departments covering 35% of the total cost each. The remaining 30%, just under 600,000 euros was paid by the commune and tourism association.
Take a spin ice-karting
And so now the new-look rink is open. The new roof should help to significantly reduce operating costs.
Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, the rink is open to the public for ice-skating. However at 8pm its all-change as the tracks become dedicated to ice-karting. Six karts with spiked tyres rule the ice for the rest of the evening. The special tyres provide extra grip to the ice but don't totally inhibit the drifting experience unique to ice-karting.
If you want to have a go at ice-karting, then forget it for this year as it has been fully booked since September when spaces first went on sale. However one little window of chance remains: Every Sunday from 7:30pm to 8pm you can turn up on the day for a chance to ice-kart and put your driving skills to the test.
Eight minutes of ice-karting costs 12 € per kart
It is difficult to find information on the internet regarding the ice rink, therefore it is advisable to contact Beaufort Tourist Office by email: info@beaufort.lu or telephone: 83 60 99 301
