A man accused of striking and killing a young party-goer told a court he forgot he was carrying a glass.
Appearing in a Luxembourg court on Monday, the 26-year-old suspect in the killing of a young Bosnian man confessed to striking the late victim.
However, he claimed, that he lashed at the victim in a bid to protect a friend, at the same time forgetting he was carrying a glass.
The incident occurred eight months ago on April 10 at M Club, in Hollerich. During a scuffle at around 2am, a 24-year-old male received cuts to the neck. He later died of his injuries. A suspect, who has not been named, was arrested and reportedly admitted his involvement.
Witnesses in court on Monday reported seeing the victim behaving aggressively towards other revellers during the course of the evening.
A little later, a friend of the defendant trod on the 24-year-old's foot, prompting him to grab the young woman's neck and pull her towards him.
The suspect said that he was afraid for his friend and impulsively lashed out in order to assist his friend. He forgot that he was carrying a glass, which broke on impact against the victim's neck, causing the fatal injuries. He also apologised to the victim's family.
A specialist doctor confirmed in court that the chances of surviving the injuries were low given the complex vascular lesions.
The court heard how the victim had 12 previous charges for assault, including one attack in which he reportedly beat an ex-girlfriend almost unconscious.
The defendant, who has been charged with causing death by wilful injury, could face a four year jail term. A judge is expected to return a decision on January 16, 2012.
