The Moselle river breached its banks this weekend after several days of torrential rain and storms.
Flood warning systems were triggered on Saturday when the river, which borders Luxembourg and Germany, rose close to levels seen in last January's dramatic floods.
The large volumes of water being carried meant that the Moselle swelled to higher than expected levels, up to 4.92 metres. By Sunday evening, levels were expected to reach around 5.10 metres.
Towns and communities based along the river watched the water rise with concern, remembering the damaging floods which occurred after rapid snow melt in January 2010.
The high water level resulted in a number of roads being closed and caused damage to property.
