(ADW) Following a dispute between Rives de Clausen establishments and the shuttle service, Luxembourg's mayor Xavier Bettel announced he would scrap “nuits blanches” (late opening hours until 3 or even 6am) if the free shuttle buses were stopped. Something that won't happen, as the problem was solved the instant Bettel announced his intentions, he explained at the Luxembourg City Breakfast meeting on Wednesday.
The "nuits blanches" had been threatened after the shuttle service considered suspending its services, but an agreement has been reached between the parties.
Another topic: the drug-help centre, also known as Fixerstuff. "We had a meeting with the departments of urban planning and architecture who told us that the project was not forgotten, but it was not a priority either," said Xavier Bettel. "We have two options: wait for the PAG (Project advisory group) or initiate a reclassification procedure. We will choose the second option, knowing that we will have to deal with appeals." The mayor would like the Fixerstuff to be open 24 hours a day. These centres should be evenly spaced across the country, but "these decisions are not the responsibility of the City of Luxembourg."
17 new buses for the City will be inaugurated on January 8. When asked why invest in buses while tram construction is in progress, Xavier Bettel responded that the tram will never replace the city bus. "The tram is a complement to the bus service," he said, "it will serve the main roads of the capital and will be an economical and ecological alternative to the car." "What we would like to do is reduce or eliminate the RGTR buses that are empty most of the time," added Alderman François Bausch,.
The final point of the city breakfast was the use of firecrackers and fireworks during the holiday season. "Commune regulations prohibits the use of fireworks in public areas except 31 December at night," concluded the Mayor of Luxembourg.
