Non-Luxembourg nationals account for nearly half of all children in pre-school education in the Grand Duchy.
Official school figures for the academic year 2010-2011, showed that of the 10,195 children enrolled in pre-school institutions, a colossal 48.3% did not have Luxembourg nationality.
Altogether, some 85,646 students and pupils were registered in private and public education systems in Luxembourg during the last academic year.
The figures show a gradual rise year on year in the number of young people studying in Luxembourg since 2002-2003 when just 78,743 learners were enrolled.
The data also showed a positive improvement in the proportion of learners leaving school with qualifications. In 2010-2011, 85.6% of final-year students graduated, compared with 80.4% in 2009-2010 and 82.2% in 2008-2009.
1,174 diplomas in secondary education were awarded, 1099 professional certificates were obtained along with 846 technical qualifications.
Average annual spending per student was highest in technical secondary education at 20,200 euros and lowest in elementary education at 15,603 euros.
