(CS) Five people are estimated to have died of a drug overdose in Luxembourg in 2011, down from 12 in 2010, estimates the drugs coordinator of the health service.
The number of deaths by overdose has been declining steadily over the past years. While 27 people died of an overdose in 2005, this number had decreased to 14 by 2009.
The 2011 figures are preliminary at this point, according to Alain Origer from the health service speaking to wort.lu.
Part of the decline in drug deaths is the so-called "Fixerstuff", a drugs centre where addicts can consume drugs under supervision using clean utensils.
The current pre-fabricated container building close to the main train station will be replaced by a new preliminary facility, also a pre-fab construction, in February.
While a permanent building is in planning for a new "Fixerstuff" on the rue d'Alsace in Hollerich, the building site is undergoing re-classification to allow for the project to start construction. This process is unlikely to be concluded before 2013.
